About Us

African American and Diaspora

African American and Diaspora historians at Penn State study slavery and emancipation, the US Civil Rights movement, and connections between Africa, the Caribbean, and the US.  Undergraduates can take courses on slavery in the Western world; African American thought; and the Civil Rights movement in the United States. African history is also an important part of our offerings. For graduate students and faculty, the Breaking the Silence initiative, Richards Civil War Era Center, and African and African American Studies Department offer cross-disciplinary venues for discussing both contemporary and historical issues.
