About Us

Comparative Colonialism

Colonialism has been a powerful theme in world history. From colonial America to the USSR to Africa, there is hardly a spot on the globe untouched by its influence. Undergraduate course offerings include popular classes on colonial North America and Latin America. Our surveys of Indian history and African history also concern themselves deeply with colonialism and its implications. Graduate students interested in comparative colonialism will find many faculty resources at Penn State.  We have exceptionally strong possibilities for studying colonialism globally (including British India, the Caribbean, Africa, and Latin America) and in time periods from the Early Modern era through the twentieth century.  These studies are supported by the African and African American Studies Department, the Latin American Studies group, the Politics and Modern Society group, and the Early Modern Initiative.
