" I am interested in health and labor questions in the United States in their political, social, cultural, scientific, and environmental aspects.  My research has centered on the health problems of working-class life.  I have investigated the hazards of miners, the emergence of employment-based health benefits, and self-help efforts of workers since the onset of industrialization.  My most recent book, Health Security for All: Dreams of Universal Health Care in America, concerned the emergence and reemergence of a distant societal ideal and occasional public-policy aim.  My current book project examines sleep, sleep deprivation, fatigue, and exhaustion among employees in transportation, health care, manufacturing, and other sectors of the 20th-century workforce.
